  5. This  application  allows  useful operations to be  performed  from  the 
  6. RiscOS desktop:
  7.  
  8.   -     The current, library or user root directory can be set either by 
  9.         name,  or by dragging a file or directory to the icon bar.  This 
  10.         comes in very useful for applications such as  compilers,  which 
  11.         expect the current directory to be set up.
  12.  
  13.   -     The current contexts can be displayed.
  14.  
  15.   -     A  directory display can be opened directly on a  currently  set 
  16.         context, or by an entered name.
  17.  
  18.   -     A file finder searches a directory tree for filenames matching a 
  19.         given specification.
  20.  
  21.   -     System data can be saved by the normal RiscOS dragging method:
  22.  
  23.           ·     Character set (as a BBC Font file)
  24.           ·     Configuration (CMOS RAM data)
  25.           ·     Wimp sprite pool, Wimp ROM sprites or system sprites
  26.  
  27.         A saved configuration file can be reloaded.
  28.  
  29.   -     Key translation can be selected to make First Word Plus  version 
  30.         2 a bit more "keyboard-friendly".

  34. Running
  35. -------
  36.  
  37. The  shared  C  library must be installed,  as  is  usual  with  desktop 
  38. applications now.  A WimpSlot of 96K is required.
  39.  
  40. Simply open a directory viewer on the !SysUtil application,  and double-
  41. click  on it.   It will install itself on the left of the icon  bar,  to 
  42. emphasise its association with (mainly) disc filing.
  43.  
  44. Interactive  help is fully supported,  and can be used to find  out  the 
  45. functions of all the windows and buttons.

  49. Detailed information
  50. --------------------
  51.  
  52. All  options are controlled via the menu obtained by clicking MENU  over 
  53. the SysUtil icon.  The menu options, in order, are:
  54.  
  55.  
  56.   Info          The normal RiscOS-style information box.
  57.  
  58.  
  59.   Contexts      Allows  the current directory context to be  manipulated 
  60.                 or displayed.  Has the sub-options:
  61.  
  62.                   Set                   Set  a  context;   pops  up  the 
  63.                                         "Set context" dialogue box.  See 
  64.                                         the relevant section below.  Can 
  65.                                         also  be  selected  by  clicking 
  66.                                         ADJUST on the SysUtil  icon,  or 
  67.                                         by dragging a file or  directory 
  68.                                         to it.

  70.                   Show                  Displays  the current  directory 
  71.                                         contexts.   Can also be shown by 
  72.                                         clicking  SELECT on the  SysUtil 
  73.                                         icon.

  75.                   Show after change     If this option is set  (ticked), 
  76.                                         the   contexts  will  be   shown 
  77.                                         automatically  every  time  they 
  78.                                         are changed by SysUtil.

  81.   Open filer    Allows  a desktop filer display to be  opened  directly.  
  82.                 Has the sub-options:
  83.  
  84.                   Current               Open  a display for the  current 
  85.                                         directory (@).
  86.  
  87.                   Volume root           Open  a display for  the  volume 
  88.                                         root directory ($).   For  ADFS, 
  89.                                         this  has  the  same  effect  as 
  90.                                         clicking  on the drive  icon  on 
  91.                                         the icon bar.
  92.  
  93.                   User root             Open  a display for the  current 
  94.                                         user  root directory  (&).   For 
  95.                                         NetFS,  this has the same effect 
  96.                                         as  clicking on the net icon  on 
  97.                                         the icon bar.

  99.                   Library               Open  a display for the  current 
  100.                                         library directory (%).
  101.  
  102.                   Enter                 Open  a display for a  directory 
  103.                                         name  entered in the  menu  box.  
  104.                                         The  pathname is translated  and 
  105.                                         expanded before use,  so  system 
  106.                                         variables and any filing  system 
  107.                                         prefix can be used.
  108.

  110.   Find File     Locate  a file;   pops up the "Find File" dialogue  box.  
  111.                 See the relevant section below.
  112.  
  113.  
  114.   Save misc     Saves the following as files.  The "Save as" box is used 
  115.                 in the normal RiscOS way.
  116.  
  117.                   Character set         Saves the current System Font as 
  118.                                         a  'BBC Font' file,  i.e.  as  a 
  119.                                         sequence  of  VDU 23  statements 
  120.                                         which can be *PRINTed to set  up 
  121.                                         those  font  definitions.    The 
  122.                                         upper  and lower limits for  the 
  123.                                         range of characters to be  saved 
  124.                                         (in  decimal)  can  be  entered;  
  125.                                         the lowest character that can be 
  126.                                         saved  is  32  (space)  and  the 
  127.                                         highest is 255.
  128.  
  129.                   Configuration         Saves   the   current   CMOS RAM 
  130.                                         settings  as  a  'Config'   file 
  131.                                         (type  &FF2;   this is an  Acorn 
  132.                                         allocated file type).   All  240 
  133.                                         bytes of memory are saved.
  134.  
  135.                                         To  reload  the  saved   config-
  136.                                         uration,  drag a Config file  to 
  137.                                         the SysUtil icon on the icon bar 
  138.                                         and confirm that you really want 
  139.                                         to  reload  it.   Location  zero 
  140.                                         (the   Econet  station   number) 
  141.                                         cannot and will not be reloaded;  
  142.                                         a special network administration 
  143.                                         utility is required to do  this.  
  144.                                         A Ctrl-Break may be necessary to 
  145.                                         recognise the new configuration.

  147.                   Wimp sprites          Save  the sprites  contained  in 
  148.                                         the  RAM  portion  of  the  Wimp 
  149.                                         sprite pool as a sprite file.
  150.  
  151.                   ROM sprites           Save  the ROM part of  the  Wimp 
  152.                                         sprite pool as a sprite file.
  153.  
  154.                   System sprites        Save the contents of the  system 
  155.                                         sprite area as a sprite file.

  158.   1stWord Keys  When ticked,  enables keyboard translation for use  with 
  159.                 First Word Plus  version 2.   See the  relevant  section 
  160.                 below.

  163.   Quit          Removes the application from memory.

  167. Using "Set context"
  168. -------------------
  169.  
  170. To  set a directory context,  pop up the "Set context" window  from  the 
  171. menu or by clicking ADJUST on the SysUtil icon.
  172.  
  173. To  select what is to be set,  tick the 'Current',  'Home' or  'Library' 
  174. option.   The  current setting for that context,  on the current  filing 
  175. system, is displayed in the 'Path' box.
  176.  
  177. To select the filing system to be used,  if required,  click on  'adfs', 
  178. 'ram',  'net' or 'Special'.   A filing system name, or existing one with 
  179. special  fields  included,  can be entered in the box to  the  right  of 
  180. 'Special'.
  181.  
  182. To  enter  the  current setting,  click on  '$',  '@',  '%'  or  '&'  as 
  183. appropriate.
  184.  
  185. A  pathname  can  be entered directly in the  'Path'  box  if  required.  
  186. However, the most expedient way to use this is to drag a file, directory 
  187. or application to the window or to the SysUtil icon.   The full pathname 
  188. of  that object (or the directory part,  in the case of a file) will  be 
  189. entered.   Clicking 'Up' will remove the last leaf name component of the 
  190. path.

  192. When  the  correct path has been entered,  clicking 'OK'  will  set  the 
  193. selected context to that.   If the "Show after change" option is set on, 
  194. all three contexts will be shown in a transient window.

  196. Click  'Cancel' or the close box to close the window and not change  the 
  197. current context.

  201. Using "Find File"
  202. -----------------
  203.  
  204. This  option  will search the directory tree for file names  matching  a 
  205. given name.   Searching is done in the background, so other desktop work 
  206. can continue while the search is running.
  207.  
  208. Select the "Find File" option from the menu to display the window.
  209.  
  210. Enter the name to be searched for in the 'Name' box.   The four  options 
  211. to the right of this determine how the name is matched:
  212.  
  213.   Exact                 The name is matched exactly as entered.
  214.  
  215.   Containing            Any   file  name  which  includes  the   entered 
  216.                         sequence of characters will match.
  217.  
  218.   Arthur wildcard       The normal RiscOS wildcard characters are recog-
  219.                         nised  (*  matches any  string,  #  matches  any 
  220.                         character).
  221.  
  222.   Unix wildcard         Wildcard characters similar to those used on the 
  223.                         Unix (TM AT&T) system are recognised.  * matches 
  224.                         any  string,   ?   matches  any  character.   [] 
  225.                         encloses a set of characters, for example [abcd] 
  226.                         matches  the letter 'a',  'b',  'c' or  'd'.   A 
  227.                         range of characters can also be  specified,  for 
  228.                         example [a-e] matches the letter 'a',  'b', 'c', 
  229.                         'd' or 'e'.  \ can be used to remove the special 
  230.                         meaning of any of these special characters.

  232. When searching for files,  a RiscOS file type can be entered (in hex) in 
  233. the  'Type' box to further restrict the search.   The name of  the  file 
  234. type will be shown in the box to the right.

  236. A  directory for the search to begin from can be entered in  the  'From' 
  237. box.  Another way of doing this is to drag a directory or application to 
  238. the window or the SysUtil icon.
  239.  
  240. The  options  'Files'  and 'Directories' can be  selected  singly  using 
  241. SELECT, or in combination using ADJUST, to define what is to be searched 
  242. for.  'Directories' will also find applications.
  243.  
  244. Select  one of the 'Action' options to indicate what is to be done  with 
  245. any  matching  objects  found.   'List details'  will  simply  show  the  
  246. pathnames  (relative to the search root),  types and sizes in a  listing 
  247. window.  'Open viewers'  will  open a directory viewer  for  the  parent 
  248. directory of each object.

  250. When all is set up,  click on 'OK' and the search will start.  It can be 
  251. halted by clicking on 'Abort';   normally the window is displayed  until 
  252. the search is over.

  256. First Word Plus keyboard translation
  257. ------------------------------------
  258.  
  259. One of the things that greatly annoys me about First Word Plus version 2 
  260. is  the function key rearrangement that has been done (is there  anybody 
  261. from  GST  reading this?).   Reformat has moved off f12 -  fair  enough, 
  262. since  this is used for another function in the RiscOS desktop - but  it 
  263. has been put on f7,  which is far too near the Delete Line (f8) key  for 
  264. my liking,  especially as there is no Undo facility to get back the line 
  265. lost when f8 is pressed by mistake.  Copy Block has been lost from Ctrl-
  266. f8 for no apparent reason,  and Indent is too far away (on f9) from  the 
  267. main keyboard area.

  269. To  this  end,  when the '1stWord Keys' option on the menu  is  selected 
  270. (ticked),  certain key translations are performed as below.  I find them 
  271. most useful.

  274.   Print         This  gives  Reformat,  identical to f7.   This  key  is 
  275.                 easier to find than f7,  and hitting an adjacent key  by 
  276.                 mistake does not have disastrous effects.
  277.  
  278.   Ctrl-f8       This gives Copy Block, identical to ^C (or to ^f8 on the 
  279.                 original 1stWord version).
  280.  
  281.   Shift-Tab     This  gives an indent,  identical to f9.   Does  nothing 
  282.                 when not in WP Mode.
